Open space is a big desire for kitchens
HUNTSVILLE, Ala.--Open spaces that allow interaction between rooms and efficient use of space are hallmarks of the modern kitchen.
"People are taking down walls and opening up their kitchens to the family room or other rooms to create more family space,"
says Scott Williams of Superior Kitchens and Baths.
It's not a quest for huge kitchens, he says. It's more about better utilization of existing space.
"People want to be involved in what's going on in the next room so they can visually or auditorily be a part of it, or see out the other windows or even what's on TV in the other room," says Richard Ashmead of ARC Design-Build Inc.
Clients are also sensitive to the ergonomic design of the kitchen, Ashmead says. They want to know how it will function when they are cooking.
Williams says clients want to maximize their space with features like pantries that are equal to 8 linear feet of space, but fit into 3 feet of wall space. "We are doing a lot more kitchens with features that useed to be considered high-end accessories, like the roll-out garbage cans and spice racks or pull-out bread boards," Ashmead says. "Now those things are becoming standard."
He also has seen an increase in oval or elliptical-shaped islands. "It prevents hitting a hip on the island when moving around the kitchen," Ashmead says.
